When you bring a new salesperson on board, the priority will be to completecompany-specific training. Unless your new employee is a rank beginner, that person will have at least a basic grasp of the mechanics of selling. However, its likely the new salesperson wont know much about your companys products or how the companys sales process works. Getting Started The easiest way to get started is to sit the new salesperson down with your customer service team. The customer service people are intimately familiar with your products and know what existing customers like the most- or the least. Let the new salesperson listen in on a few customer service calls, and give the new hire access to as much documentation about the products as possible. Documentation ranges from user guides to brochures to your websites. Once familiar with your product line, partner the new person up with an experienced member of the sales team. Listening to phone calls and riding along on appointments gives a new employee an idea of how the process works. Just experiencing one sale- from beginningto end- can have a lasting impact. Training Internally or Externally If your new salesperson demonstrates weaknesses in a particular area (for example, she is great at getting appointments but chokes at the close) then its time for some basic training. You can either train internally (that is, do it yourself or assign a senior salesperson) or externally (for example, signing your new employee up for formal training such as a sales training class). Internal training is cheaper and you can customize it to your employees needs, but its time-consuming. It can end up costing you more in the long ansturm if your best salespersonspends valuable time doing the training instead of making sales. An alternative is to combine both approaches sign the new employee up for an external class, then arrange for that person to practice internally by arranging role-playing sessions or sending him out on appointments. Regarding seasoned salespeople, any time you add a new product or service, all of your salespeople need to know about it, elend just the novices. 4 Universal Training Tips Use Empathy. Any good salesperson is a good problem- solver. Two red flags that you can pass on to your salespeople include prospects who are rude during the sales process (and arent worth the aggravation) and needy prospects thatll email you five times a day (and arent worth the time). Help your salespeople spot the bad customers so they can focus on selling to the good customers because theyre the ones that will keep your sales numbers up. Overcoming Fear. Especially when it comes to less experienced salespeople, you need to help them overcome fear. For starters, most people have a fear of rejection- and rejection comes with every sales job. Let your salespeople know that they will get rejected- a lot. And remember, even the most social people have a fear of public speaking. To help prepare them, have each member of your team practice making presentations to other sales members so they (slowly) overcome their fear of performance. I wish I had a mathematical model for success. But I dont. I can, however, share some insights, which my colleagues, including chief technologists and senior engineers at the three major aero-engineering companies, GE, Rolls Royce and Pratt and Whitney, have validated. The consensus It all comes down to 12 basic principles Be business oriented Understand how the total costs to produce your company or organizations product affect decisions. You may feel removed from such macroeconomics, but you can look at your cost to the firmsalary, benefits, and overhead averages $200,000 a yearand try to add commensurate value. Working within a financial budget and time frames is also key, for as your organization prospers so will you. Expect tough, multi-disciplinary problems On the job, youll often confront design issues outside your technical discipline. Therefore, learn the basics of relevant specialties, but keep in mind there over- design, analysis, and research can drive unnecessary cost. Find out how your customers define value and let it be your guide. Be one with the team In academe, the pursuit of knowledge can be a solitary effort. In industry, however, you work in teams and must often resolve the conflicting needs and solutions that arise when engineers from varying disciplines collaborate to bring a product to market. Those best able to reach consensus are the engineers who know how to network and communication, skills that are as important as technical expertise Know the difference between academe and industry Businesses prosper by finding new ways to apply science, physics, and math to construct engines, airplanes, bridges, and buildings. Hence, industry strictly controls design procedures and research findings, which are vital to a companys competitiveness. Unlike in a university setting, whe re academics are free to publish and promote, a firms employees must often consent to proprietary-information and patent-ownership agreements as a condition of employment. Make the most of what youve got What are your strengths and weaknesses? Enhance the former and fix the latter. Ask yourself, Do I have what it takes to be outstanding? Management confers that quality on high-energy employees who are enthusiastic about their work, can rally others around common goals, and consistently deliver measurable results. Know where you work Learn and live by your employers values and code of conduct. These are core to your firms approach to honesty, trustworthiness, conflict resolution, fairness, safety, and diversity. If you can improve them, try. Just as important if you cannot embrace them, move on. Be open to new ideas A positive attitude is key to success. Aside from downright incompetence, nothing hinders you more than a schwimmbad attitude. As important Beware the Not-Invented-Here a ttitude, i.e., dont reject or discredit ideas because they come from sources outside your group. Accept right ideas and reject wrong ones no matter their source. Put integrity first Its essential to maintain high integrity throughout your career. Careless design and lazy analysis can cause social, economic, and environmental damageeven injury and deathas well as reputational risk for you and your company. You, as an engineer, must exercise unyielding integrity and do your best to prevent harm. Make your manager a success You may feel intimidated by your manager given that he or she recommends people for promotion, determines salary, conducts appraisals, assigns work projects, hires even fires. But, a good manager wants you to succeed, because when you do you make him or her successful. If you feel antagonistic towards your manager, examine your reactions and motives carefully. If you cant adjust your attitude look for another job. Give back when you can You owe a great deal to your university. Support your alma mater, visit occasionally to give seminars, keep in touch with the faculty, and share with students wisdom you have gained. Participation in technical societies is also an excellent way to grow and network. Writing technical papers and/or organizing a technical session at association conferences will enhance your experience and your firms reputation. Take charge Dont expect your manager to chart your path. Its your job to figure out what you want and how to get it. Seek diverse assignments, broaden your experience, and make the most of company-paid education benefits, training programs, and professional society technical conferences. Technology is constantly evolving. If you cant keep up there is always a bright-eyed engineering graduate who will. Have fun If you arent, move on. You should love what you do. Since engineering offers plenty of exciting and challenging opportunities, that shouldnt be difficult. Many economists and financial analysts are speculating that the reason professional women, particularly those at an executive level are leaving because their salaries have become pocket moneyRecent data indicates that since the last recession, which saw a re-entry of women into the workforce as husbands were laid off, well-educated women are starting to exit the workforce again in a larger trend seen over the past 20 years. The reason may have to do with the faster-growing salaries of men versus women.The picture this economy paints today is reminiscient of the WW2 workers who filled in the gaps when the male workforce was away, only in our more recent case, women picked up the sla ck when men were laid off. But the similarities continuedDuring our mini recession women could be and were paid less, making them an attractive alternative.Now that the economy is showing signs of recovery, the pay gap is once again widening and women are leaving the workforce (the men are back).Often times, entire paychecks are going to care for children.But there are other voices, who while acknowledging the cyclical pattern of women leaving the workforce and the rightfully outrageous pay discrepancies that exist at even the highest echelons of corporations, who say that while women may be leaving the workforce at the highest numbers in decades, they may be carving out different kinds of employment for themselves and their families, and leading one of the biggest workforce shifts in our industrialized history.Anecdotally, Id say there is an underground sea change afoot. Everywhere I look, women are starting microbusinessesselling jewelry or T-shirts on Etsy.com, becoming personal trainers, freelance writing and editing, offering birth hilfe as doulas, massaging clients in their homes. Legally, or not-so-legally, women are increasingly working 10-40 hours a week outside the traditional workforce modelin addition to raising their children. Are the statistics tracking this? At least for the cash-economy jobs, almost certainly not.One fascinating study has found this may be a personal choice by women to deny any discrimination they MAY face. Essentially, walking away when their market value is the highest to avoid seeing the unfair paychecks and bungled promotions.But for smart recruiters, HR Practitioners and organizations looking to keep this educated and experienced workforce in play, ideas abound, including the ever popular job sharing options, work flex time, smaller commutes, subsidized childcare and more options for working mothers.
